Indoor Air Quality

JM Mechanical goes beyond just the heating and cooling equipment for your home. We also focus on the indoor air quality, which is the Indoor Forecast Advantage. The major aspects of indoor air quality consist of proper humidity levels, proper air filtration, ventilation and UV light purification. The air inside your home is typically more polluted than the air outside. People spend on average 90% of their time indoors and with the indoor air being 2-5 times more polluted than the outside air. In fact, the EPA has named indoor air pollution as one of the top five environmental risks to public health and proper steps should be taken to reduce your symptoms of toxic air. These three Indoor Air Quality products are likely safer and more effective than the flu shot.
The first thing to look at in indoor air quality if proper air filtration. Air filters are rated by MERV ratings. The higher the MERV rating the better it filters the air. MERV 13 is the lowest MERV rating before an air filter really starts removing pollutants in the air. Anything below a MERV 13 will only protect the equipment from large particles of dust. A good air filter with a MERV 13 rating can capture and remove particles as small as one micron, that’s 1/100th the size of a human hair. Here are a few key highlights of JM Mechanicals standard air filter from Aprilarie.
98% • Traps 98% of pollen and mold spores
97% • Permanently captures at least 97% of bacteria and fungi
96% • Traps 96% of pet dander and respirable dust
75% • Traps <75% of tobacco smoke and smog
10x Provides more than 10 times the filtering media used in standard 1″ furnace filters

The second aspect of indoor air quality to look at would be humidification. Proper humidity levels are very important to your health and the health of your home. If you have proper humidity levels, you will also feel warmer in your home with lower temperatures. It affects not only you and your family, but it effects your furniture, hardwood floors, trim work, cabinetry, and other items in the home that rely on proper moisture levels. In fact, some hardwood floor companies will not warranty their floors if proper humidity levels are not maintained. Low humidity levels, especially in the winter months can dry out the air which will dry out your skin, cause static electricity, give you chapped lips and dry hands, and most importantly it dries out the nasal passages which is your bodies first defense in keeping viruses and bacteria from entering your body.
It is a common misconception that cold air “winter” is the cause of catching the common cold or flu. While the cold and flu are more common during this time is not due to the cold air temperature. It is due to the cold air being dry. The influenza virus and rhinovirus have a better chance of surviving and spreading in low humidity environments. In the United States, colds are more common in the fall and winter. This is mostly due to factors such as the start of the school year and the tendency for people to remain indoors. Inside, air tends to be drier. Dry air dries up the nasal passages, which can lead to infection. Humidity levels also tend to be lower in colder weather. Cold viruses are better able to survive in low humidity conditions. The ideal range of humidity through the cold weather months is somewhere between 30-50%. To low and the air is to dry, to high and mold will start to grow and dust mites will reproduce at an accelerated rate.

The third topic to look at for indoor air quality is the use of UV lights which stands for ultraviolet germicidal light. UV lights are installed on your homes heating and cooling system and typically located near the evaporator coil if all possible. Ultra violet lights simulate nature’s way of purifying the outside air by its own ultra violet light. UV lights are used by hospitals and other medical facilities to clean the air. UV lights can kill most Bioaerosols. The most common know bioaerosol commonly know is mold. Germs are also known as bioaerosols or pathogens. Bioaerosols air airborne pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, mold, fungi and mildew just to name a few. Another indoor air pollutant is VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds). These gases can cause indoor allergies and even produce odors in the home. They are neutralized by UV lights.

James H. and Jeff F. were prompt as per usual this morning and gave prior notification via text messaging that they were on their way. We have nothing but nice things to say about this company. They are always clear and concise on the course of action necessary to fix the problem. Every time we have used J.M. Mechanical we have been treated with the utmost respect and have never talked down to us like some other companies have done. They installed a new heat pump for us today and we couldn’t be happier with the results. They were fast and efficient in every way and we will continue to use them on any of our future needs.
